Believes the old institutions — family, religion, national belonging, gendered roles — are what makes a society function. Progressive change feels destabilising, not liberating.
Mainstream social conservatives are the backbone of every right-of-centre party. They vote for lower taxes and traditional marriage, attend church, raise their kids to say 'please' and 'thank you', and view much of what progressive activism calls 'progress' as a rolling act of cultural vandalism. They are not reactionaries — they just don't buy the premise that everything needs to change.
